Your Child's Recovery Matters

A stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) can be an emotional and overwhelming experience for both children and their families. It’s completely natural to feel uncertain or anxious during this time. While your child may be on the road to recovery, the effects of a hospital stay—on how they feel, move, think or behave—can sometimes appear after returning home.

Our PICU Follow-Up Clinic is designed to help children and families with the transition from hospital to home. Our team is here to help answer your questions, monitor your child’s progress and provide the care and reassurance your family needs every step of the way.

This clinic is not a replacement for your pediatrician. Your pediatrician is still your child’s main doctor. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the hospital and your child’s regular care. We work with your pediatrician to give your child the best support during recovery.

The PICU Follow-Up Clinic is open Thursday afternoons at Marshall Pediatrics located on the 3rd floor of the Marshall University Medical Center in Huntington. For more information, please call 304.399.1840.

We check on:

  • Physical healing and strength
  • Memory, focus and learning
  • Emotions, mood and behavior
  • How your family is coping
  • Medical needs like sedation weans and central lines
  • Referrals to other doctors or services, if needed

Your child may benefit from this clinic if they:

  • Stayed in the PICU for more than four (4) days
  • Were intubated on a breathing machine
  • Got strong medicines for blood pressure (vasoactive meds)
  • Are going home on a sedation wean
  • Have a central line (like a PICC line)
  • Had a serious infection, heart or brain injury
  • Lost a loved one during their hospital stay

We’re here to help your child recover fully—and to support your entire family along the way.
