Epilepsy
Understanding Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurrent seizures. Seizures happen when there is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain, leading to changes in awareness, behavior, movement or sensation.
Epilepsy can affect people of any age—from young children to older adults—and symptoms vary widely. With the right diagnosis and treatment, most people with epilepsy can manage their seizures and live full, active lives.
You should see a provider if you or a loved one experiences:
- A first-time seizure
- Recurrent or unexplained episodes of staring, shaking or loss of awareness
- Seizures despite current medication
- Side effects from seizure medications
- Concerns about safety, school, work or daily activities
Immediate emergency care is needed if a seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, follows another seizure without recovery or occurs in water.
