ALS Clinic
The Marshall University ALS Clinic is the only ALS Association Recognized Treatment Center in West Virginia. This designation requires an in-person site visit by the ALS Association and detailed review of the comprehensive nature of the care being provided to those with ALS before recognition is granted by a national review board. We are proud to provide this level of care in combination with a highly accessible and personable approach.

What to Expect
Our monthly multidisciplinary clinic is held on the third Friday of every month at the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center, located in Smith Hall 143 on the Marshall University Huntington campus. Beginning in late summer 2024, the multidisciplinary clinic will move to and be held at Marshall Neurology on the Fourth Floor of the new outpatient medical pavilion at Cabell Huntington Hospital, 1340 Hal Greer Blvd. in Huntington.
Patients will have access to a comprehensive care team, including an on-site neurologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, dietitian, respiratory therapist, pharmacist and social worker.
During their first clinic visit, each patient will receive a comprehensive assessment by their care team and be afforded the opportunity to ask questions. The care team will make a personalized treatment plan and determine the appropriate time for follow-up visits. In addition to specialized care, the clinic also connects ALS patients and their caregivers with information about a support group and resources available through the ALS Foundation.
"Each person living with ALS has their own story and a journey that is uniquely their own. Our team is committed to hearing your story and to helping you and your family navigate that journey."

Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology
Medical Director, Marshall University ALS Clinic
Frequently Asked Questions
During your first visit, you will receive a comprehensive assessment by multiple health professionals, including your neurologist, physical therapist, speech therapist, dietitian, respiratory therapist, occupational therapist, and social worker. Each professional will offer recommendations and answer any questions related to their field.
Due to the number of health professionals who will meet with you on your first clinic visit, please plan to be at the clinic for approximately four hours. During your visit, you will have the chance to speak with an ALS Association representative if you choose to do so.
Following your initial visit, your team of health professionals will meet to collaborate on your case. A list of recommendations will be mailed to you when the clinic concludes.
After your initial assessment, the ALS Clinic will recommend your appropriate follow-up visits; typically scheduled about every three months. These visits allow you the opportunity to report any changes in physical, communication or health status. Regular follow-up visits are crucial to being proactive in the management of ALS. You will not usually need to see every member of the multidisciplinary team at every follow-up visit.
The physician and speech therapist will bill your insurance for services provided. Please check with your insurance provider to determine the co-pay or cost associated with those services. Let your provider know if you are a Veteran as you may qualify for service-connected benefits.
All additional services within the clinic will be offered at NO cost.
If you are unable to afford the physician/speech therapist co-pays, please ask to speak with the ALS Association representative during your visit. Funding may be available to help offset these costs.
