Marshall Health Administrative Fellowship
The administrative fellowship at Marshall Health is designed to cultivate the next generation of health care leaders, equipping participants with a comprehensive skill set and a deep understanding of the complexities within the health care industry.
The 12-month multidisciplinary program, based in Huntington, West Virginia, is designed to provide fellows with a range of experiences in strategic planning, clinical operations, ambulatory care, digital solutions, network development, facilities planning, performance improvement and patient experience. Fellows assume a contributing role on the health care management team, providing a tailored fellowship experience based on your interests and strengths.

The Marshall Health Administrative Fellowship is composed of four- and two-week rotations across the organization. Each rotation provides fellows project-based work, shadowing opportunities with department leaders and networking opportunities. Following the completion of the core rotations, the fellow may select elective rotations throughout Marshall Health that match their interests, skills and provide a well-rounded experience.
Core Curriculum
These required rotations will embed the fellow in key administrative and operational service lines. The length of rotation is subject to change based on the fellow’s primary areas of interest.
Administration & Leadership
- Overview of the health system's organizational structure, mission and values.
- Exposure to executive leadership roles and responsibilities.
- Participation in leadership meetings and strategic planning sessions.
- Shadowing key administrators to understand decision-making processes.
- Project management and leadership skills development.
Communications & Marketing
- Organizational branding guidelines and strategies
- Digital marketing tools, analytics platforms and communication best practices
- Marketing strategies aligned with organizational goals
- Content creation for various marketing channels, including social media, websites and publications
- Internal stakeholder engagement, including clinical teams, executives and staff, to understand communication needs
Finance
- Exposure to financial decision-making and resource allocation
- Analysis of financial reports and performance metrics
- Budget development and variance analysis
- Cost containment and financial sustainability strategies
Operations
Organizational Analysis of operational efficiency and workflow optimization.
- Exposure to HIM, ROI, Provider Enrollment, & Referrals departments
- Monthly organizational reporting
- Current projects for organization operations
- Current vendors optimization and review for organizational use.
Facility Management
- Patient safety and risk management activities
- Joint Commission readiness activities
- Understand the role of facility maintenance and housekeeping
Information Technology & Health Informatics
- Understanding of health care information systems and electronic health records.
- Exposure to health informatics and data analytics.
- Cybersecurity and compliance in health care IT.
Clinic Management
- Collaboration with clinical teams to understand patient care processes.
- Shadow and work alongside three clinical department administrators, including exposure to both large and smaller departments
- Learns roles of clinic supervisors for patient service representatives, billing and nursing
- Understand the role of pharmacists in a clinical setting

Field(s) of Interest:
Fellows will identify specific areas of professional interest within the organization and spend focused time embedded in those service lines or functional departments.
- Fellows will select an initial field of interest to gain early exposure and hands-on involvement alongside operational leaders.
- As the fellowship progresses, fellows may deepen their engagement in that area or expand into additional fields aligned with their evolving interests and organizational priorities.

In addition to rotations, fellows may have opportunities for:
- Leadership training and seminars
- Networking events with industry professionals
- Mentorship from senior leaders within the health system
- Attendance at relevant conferences and workshops
- Participation in ongoing education and professional certification programs
Mentoring
Fellows will be assigned an executive mentor at the start of the fellowship. This mentor will provide guidance and resources for the capstone project and be available for questions as fellows move through the curriculum. The fellow and mentor will establish a regular cadence for mentoring meetings.
Capstone Project and Benchmarks
Fellows will integrate knowledge gained throughout the curriculum to produce a strategic capstone project focused on improving current operations at Marshall Health. This project will be discussed and approved by the executive mentor.
This project provides real-world experience and outcomes for fellows to show growth and provide feedback and reflection on their fellowship experience. Fellows will have designated time to work on their project weekly. Mentors will help fellows establish benchmarks and provide guidance over the course of project development.
Prior to completion of the program, each fellow will present their project to senior leadership and key stakeholders.
Administrative fellows are salaried, part- or full-time employees of Marshall Health. Fellows are eligible for benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, retirement plan, sick and annual leave according to their employee status. Stipend is commensurate with experience.
- Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and must be actively pursuing a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one or more of the following fields of study or related degree programs: Hospital Administration, Health Care Administration or Business Administration. Preference will be given to Marshall University graduates or current graduate students.

Is this a paid fellowship?
Yes, administrative fellows are considered full-time employees and are offered a competitive salary and employee benefits for the duration of their fellowship.
What are the program dates?
The fellowship is a 12-month program that starts in July of each year.
Are fellows guaranteed a permanent position at Marshall Health Network upon completion of the program?
There is no guarantee of a post-fellowship position; however, it is the hope that administrative fellows will seek out a position with Marshall Health Network upon completion of their training.
