Sexual Health Support

Many women face issues with intimate health at some point in their lifetime, while for others it may be ongoing. We understand the unique and sensitive nature of female sexual health, and we're here to provide compassionate care and support for women experiencing sexual dysfunction. Sexual health is an integral part of overall well-being, and our team is dedicated to helping you address any concerns you may have in a safe and confidential environment.

Our Sexual Health Clinic is a multidisciplinary approach designed to help improve sexual outcomes based on the patient’s personal needs. Led by Jessica Buerck, MD, FACOG, our clinic sees patients at the Marshall University Medical Center in Huntington and Marshall Health – Teays Valley. Patients can be seen without a referral and do not need to be already established with a Marshall Health physician. We will work with your primary OB/GYN to achieve your desired results.

For an appointment, call Marshall OB/GYN at 304.691.1400.

What is Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD)?

Female sexual dysfunction refers to a variety of problems that interfere with a woman's ability to experience sexual satisfaction. These issues can manifest in different ways, including:

  • Low Libido: A lack of interest in sexual activity or a decreased desire for intimacy.
  • Painful Intercourse: Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, which can have physical or psychological origins.
  • Difficulty Arousing: Difficulty becoming sexually aroused or maintaining arousal during sexual activity.
  • Orgasmic Disorders: Difficulty reaching orgasm or experiencing orgasms that are not satisfying.

Understanding the Causes

Female sexual dysfunction can have a range of causes, including physical, psychological, and hormonal factors. These may include:

  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as those experienced during menopause or after childbirth, can affect sexual desire and function.
  • Medical Problems: Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, obesity and autoimmune disorders can lead to sexual dysfunction as can many medications used to treat these problems.
  • Physical Factors: Conditions affecting the reproductive systems, such as vulvar or vaginal pain disorders, chronic pelvic pain and vaginal dryness, as well as recovery from pregnancy and childbirth can also cause symptoms of FSD.
  • Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, depression and a history of sexual abuse or trauma can all impact sexual desire and function.
  • Relationship Issues: Conflict or dissatisfaction within a relationship can also affect sexual intimacy.

Our Approach to Care

At Marshall Health, we take a comprehensive approach to addressing female sexual dysfunction. Our team of experienced gynecologists and a physical therapist work together to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: We begin by conducting a thorough assessment to understand the underlying causes of your sexual health concerns. This may involve medical history review, physical examinations and psychological assessments.
  • Individualized Treatment: Based on our evaluation, we develop a personalized treatment plan designed to address your specific needs and goals. This may include a combination of medication treatment, pelvic floor physical therapy, counseling and lifestyle modifications.
  • Education and Support: We believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and resources to support their sexual health journey. We provide education on sexual anatomy, function and healthy sexual practices, as well as guidance on communication and intimacy within relationships.
  • Continued Care and Follow-Up: Our commitment to your well-being doesn't end after your initial visit. We provide ongoing support and follow-up care to monitor your progress, adjust treatment as needed, and address any concerns that may arise.

These visits are in addition to your routine gynecological care.  Routine gynecological screenings and ongoing treatment of other gynecological problems will be managed by your primary OB/GYN.
