Mike McCarthy holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Marshall University, where he graduated in the inaugural class of the Society of Yeager Scholars in 1991. 

He has worked in the health care information technology field at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine since 1992 and currently serves as the school’s Chief Information Officer.  He also has the title of Vice President of Information Services for Marshall Health Network where he guides policy and initiatives in data analytics and artificial intelligence.

He holds a seat on the board of directors of the WV Health Information Network (WVHIN) and has served on the board of advisors for Marshall University’s graduate health informatics program. He has also served as adjunct faculty for Marshall’s technology management graduate program.

He is a named author on peer-reviewed publications in the field of predictive analytics, including “Predicting Medical Student Success on Licensure Exams (Medical Science Educator, October 2015) and “Validity and Reliability of Pre-matriculation and institutional Assessments in Predicting USMLE Step 1 Success:  Lessons from a Traditional 2 x 2 Curriculum Model” (Frontiers in Medicine, 2022). 

More recently, he has completed the AI in Health Care Program from MIT’s Sloan School of Executive Management and is a member of the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI).
