Should Replacement (Arthroplasty)

Shoulder replacement surgery removes damaged joint surfaces and replaces them with artificial implants to relieve pain and restore function. It is typically recommended when degenerative joint conditions — especially severe arthritis — significantly limit movement and quality of life. This surgery may involve replacing just the ball of the joint (partial), the ball and socket (total) or using a reversed implant design when the rotator cuff has extensive damage.

Conditions We Treat

Shoulder replacement is recommended for:

  • Severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Advanced cartilage wear (bone-on-bone pain)
  • Non-healing fractures or failed prior surgeries
  • Rotator cuff tear arthropathy, especially when the rotator cuff is irreparable

What to Expect

Shoulder replacement surgery is done under general anesthesia with possible regional block. The surgeon exposes the joint, removes damaged surfaces and places metal and plastic implants. You may go home the same day or stay 1–3 nights, depending on your needs.

Benefits

Patients who undergo a shoulder replacement experience:

  • Significant pain relief and improved range of motion
  • Improved quality of life especially for those with advanced arthritis
  • Long-term results due to modern implant designs tailored to meet individual needs
