Chronic health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and autoimmune diseases can significantly impact your vision and eye health. At Marshall Eye Surgeons, our specialized optometry care is designed to support patients managing these conditions.

Why Annual Eye Exams Matter

Annual eye exams are more than just checking your vision—they can help detect early signs of serious health issues, including damage from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes among others. Routine eye exams are essential for detecting early signs of chronic disease-related eye complications, such as:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Macular degeneration

Even if you’re not experiencing noticeable symptoms, these exams can identify issues before they become more serious, protecting your vision and overall health.

What to Expect

During your visit, our optometry team will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your vision and eye health.
  • Use advanced imaging technology to monitor for any disease-related changes.
  • Coordinate with your primary care provider or specialist to ensure holistic care.

When should you get an eye exam?

The timing for eye exams depends on your age, overall health, and risk factors. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Children: At 6 months, 3 years, before starting school, and every 1–2 years thereafter.
  • Adults (18–60): Every 2 years if you’re healthy, but annually if you wear glasses, contacts, or have risk factors.
  • Adults (60+): Annually to monitor for age-related conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
  • Patients with Chronic Conditions (any age): Annually, or as recommended by your provider, to monitor for complications related to diabetes, high blood pressure or autoimmune diseases.

You may also need eye exams more often if you work in a job that can cause eye injury of any kind or take medicines with side effects that can cause changes in the eyes.

If you notice sudden changes in vision, pain, or discomfort, schedule an appointment right away. Regular exams are key to maintaining healthy vision.
