You have two kidneys that perform important functions within your body's urinary system. Their primary function is to filter your blood, remove wastes and extra water, which then become urine. They also keep the body's chemicals in balance, control blood pressure and produce hormones.

Take good care of your kidneys

There is not a cure for chronic kidney disease, so it is important to make healthy lifestyle choices to keep your kidneys healthier longer:

  • Choose foods with less salt (sodium)
  • Control your blood pressure
  • Keep your blood sugar in the target range
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Choose foods that are healthy for your heart, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy
  • Lose weight, if you are overweight
  • Get more active
  • Don't smoke
